Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the The School of Urban and Regional Planning in the Faculty of Community Services [FCS] at Ryerson University invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University with the successful candidate to be appointed for a term of five years (subject to extension in year 3), commencing July 1, 2022, with the possibility of renewal for an additional three- or five-year term.

The duties and responsibilities of Department Director are laid out in detail in article 26.1.E. of the Ryerson Faculty Association Collective Agreement. Reporting to the Dean, the Director will provide exemplary academic and administrative leadership, including stewardship of human and financial resources, and will work collaboratively to provide leadership for curriculum, program development, professional accreditation, community engagement, and faculty development, research and scholarly activity, while promoting and coordinating the continued evolution of the school.  The new Director will be a visionary leader who can take the school to the next level of achievement, consistent with the academic plan of the Faculty and the University.

The Director will champion the School’s mission in city-building and sustainable community development and will promote and support the school’s ongoing efforts related to equity and anti-Systemic Racism and Discrimination Working Group. The Director is responsible for providing academic and administrative leadership in respect of, but not limited to, teaching; the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate curricula and programs; creating a fair, equitable, inclusive and supportive environment for student learning and engagement: supporting faculty involvement in scholarly, research and creative activities; representing the School in the University; and liaison with the planning profession and communities. The Director is required to administer the affairs of the School after appropriate consultation with its members, striving to ensure collegiality and collegial decision-making. They will also be responsible for overseeing the implementation of University equity, diversity and inclusion priorities and initiatives within the department.

The successful candidate must have a degree in planning and a Ph.D. in planning or a related field, or a combination of academic and professional qualifications that are equivalent and shall be a tenured faculty member at Ryerson University or be eligible for tenure upon appointment. The candidate must hold the registered professional planner designation (RPP) or equivalent or be in the process of obtaining the designation and must demonstrate the following: 

  • an established reputation in the professional community; 
  • an excellent record of scholarly research and/or influential practice; 
  • teaching experience in one of the core curriculum; 
  • capacity to provide effective academic and administrative leadership 
  • an ability to support the development of scholarship;
  • a deep commitment to excellent communication with students and respect for student experience that is central to the University’s mission. 
  • a commitment to upholding the values of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities as well as a willingness to uphold these values as Director, in fostering an inclusive work environment; 
  • an active and productive scholarly record; and 
  • demonstrated commitment to mentoring junior faculty. 

 

Preference will be given to a candidate with relevant experience in teaching including in a studio setting, research and academic administration.  

The School of Urban and Regional Planning, consisting of approximately 450 undergraduate and 70 graduate students, prides itself both on the quality of its teaching and the breadth and excellence of its research. The School offers a four-year undergraduate planning degree, a two-year Post-Baccalaureate/Diploma planning degree and a Master of Planning degree in Urban Development, all of which are professionally accredited by the Planning Institutes of Canada. The School is a significant contributor to planning education in Canada and is particularly well known for the quality of its applied approach to planning education, especially studio-based teaching, and its excellent students. We have a large, loyal and engaged alumni network, and recently celebrated our 50th anniversary.
