Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the The School of Early Childhood Studies in the Faculty of Community Services [FCS] at Ryerson University invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Early Childhood Studies at Ryerson University with the successful candidate to be appointed for a term of five years (subject to extension in year 3), commencing July 1, 2022, with the possibility of renewal for an additional three- or five-year term.
The duties and responsibilities of School Director are laid out in detail in article 26.1.E. of the Ryerson Faculty Association Collective Agreement. Reporting to the Dean, the Director will provide exemplary academic and administrative leadership, including stewardship of human and financial resources, and will work collaboratively to provide leadership for curriculum, program development, professional accreditation, community engagement, and faculty development, research and scholarly activity, while promoting and coordinating the continued evolution of the school. The new Director will be a visionary leader who can take the School to the next level of achievement, consistent with the academic plan of the Faculty and the University.
The School of Early Childhood Studies is the oldest school of its kind in Canada. It offers unique Bachelor and Master of Arts in Early Childhood Studies programs. Our undergraduate program focuses on education, development and care of young children from birth to 8 years of age and offers varied modes of delivery including: i) a full-time BA program; ii) a part time BA program in class or on-line; iii) a consecutive BA/BEd program in partnership with York University; and iv) a degree completion program for graduates of community college diploma programs. Our graduates of the BA program are eligible to register with the College of Early Childhood Educators. In addition, the School has an on-campus laboratory school and a multi-service agency (EarlyOn and Family Supports Programs and Resource Consultation). Our Master of Arts program is unique among graduate programs in North America given its interdisciplinary focus on early childhood studies.
The Director will provide exemplary academic and administrative leadership, including management of human and financial resources, and will work collaboratively with the Associate Director – Academic Leadership, Associate Director – Field Education, Associate Director – Lab Schools, faculty, staff, contract lecturers, and students to ensure that curriculum planning, program development, and community engagement activities support excellence in scholarship, research, teaching and learning. In addition, the Director will provide strong advocacy on behalf of the School in relation to other University departments, the profession itself and external stakeholders.
The Director will apply innovative strategies, sound knowledge of constantly changing university and professional environments, strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills and a student-centred approach, to solve complex problems and enable the School to achieve its goals. The Director will role model the School’s and the university’s EDI values and commitments, and furthermore promote EDI in the context of the profession and the academic discipline.
The candidate must have a doctorate in a relevant discipline, undergraduate and graduate level teaching experience, and a well-established record of relevant externally funded research and scholarly publications. The successful candidate will be a tenured faculty member at Ryerson University, or have obtained tenure by the time the appointment commences. Preference will be given to a candidate with relevant experience in teaching, research and academic administration. Experience with children or families is also preferred. An understanding of current issues and trends in both early childhood studies and post-secondary education, is required as is an understanding and commitment to collegial governance.
