Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the School of Disability Studies in the Faculty of Community Services at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Disability Studies, with specialization in critical disability, mad, and Deaf studies approach as it intersects with science and technology studies and/or bioethics, effective July 1st, 2023, subject to final budgetary approval. 

We especially welcome applications from candidates with secondary expertise in other areas such as community-engaged research methods and disability, health and social policy. Applications from candidates who self identify as members of equity-deserving groups are particularly encouraged and such candidates are encouraged to self identify through our Applicant Diversity Self-ID questionnaire.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research and creative activity (SRC), and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will entail teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of students and curriculum development. The successful candidate will pursue a strong, externally funded innovative research program that produces cutting-edge, impactful, high quality results. 

Candidates must hold a doctorate degree in critical disability studies or a closely related field. Candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are able to demonstrate that they are very close to completion may also be considered. In addition, candidates must present evidence of the following:  

  • strong emerging scholarly research that is current, innovative, and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards, and other writing that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the field; 
  • demonstrated potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum  and suitability for teaching in a graduate program, as evidenced by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
  • a commitment to social justice values as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability and commitment to building open access in teaching and learning; and an ability and willingness to contribute to the School of Disability Studies and the University through collegial service. 
  • experience in developing and directing community-engaged experiential learning opportunities. 
  • strong connections to disability, mad and Deaf communities.
