Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on Treaty 13, the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Community Services (FCS) at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2024, subject to final budgetary approval.  

The School of Social Work acknowledges the contributions, lived experiences and remarkable resilience of Indigenous and Black-identified peoples who continue to seek liberation within the colonial project of Canada. We strive to be a leader in critical social work education, research, and practice that works against anti-Black racism and anti-Indigenous racism and advances anti-oppression, anti-racism, anti-colonialism/decolonization, feminism, anti-capitalism, queer and trans liberation struggles, issues in disability and Madness, among other social justice struggles. 

Toronto is home to dynamic Asian Canadian and Asian diasporic communities. We believe that increasedrepresentation of and by these communities will positively contribute to our university and student body.The School of Social Work encourages applications from scholars who identify as Asian who focus on Asian scholarship and anti-Asian racism. 

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Responsibilities will include: teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and contributing to curriculum and scholarship that focuses on resistance to anti-Asian racism and social work practice with Asian populations and communities; assisting in the review and development of new courses; enhancing relationships with Asian-centred communities and agencies; and engaging in collegial service that contributes to the continuing success of the School of Social Work, the Faculty and the University.

Candidates must have an earned doctorate degree or be close to completion (within two years of employment start date), with a social work degree (MSW and/or BSW). Candidates must demonstrate:

  • social work practice experience;
  • evidence of a beginning program of research;
  • high-quality teaching; and,
  • a commitment to the following: community engagement, collegial work environment, making learning accessible, inclusive and equitable for a diverse student population, field education and practice, and service that enhances the collegial governance of the School.
     

Candidates’ scholarship should focus on addressing anti-Asian racism, Asian Diasporas, and/or social work practice with Asian populations and communities. Familiarity with online/hybrid learning is an asset.

We are particularly interested in scholars with lived experience and whose research addresses anti-Asian racism and social work practice with Asian populations/communities broadly as well as intersectional areas including, but not limited to health equity; mental health; education equity; aging; racing and gendering queer and trans liberation; Asian resistance and social movements; Asian Canadian feminisms; Critical (Dis)ability in Asian communities; relational racialization including anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Muslim racism/Islamophobia, and settler colonialism; field education and experiential learning, etc. 

Our use of the term “Asian” recognizes the heterogeneous and socio-politically constructed grouping of peoples that derive from East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and West Asian backgrounds. Our use of the term “Muslim” encompasses many ethno-cultural and linguistic groups, including those of Arab or Middle Eastern, Indonesian, Malaysian, Filipino, Asian-African, Indian and/or Chinese backgrounds.
